HTTP 402 a playground for paying the web

Pay your way through the web.

Some pages here hide behind a little door marked 402. Pay a few sats and the door opens for that one request. Hatch a spider, hand it a budget, and watch it do the same on its own. Every knock shows up in the protocol inspector, headers and all.

  1. 402 knock, get a price
  2. pay, get a preimage
  3. 200 knock again, door opens
GET /garden/page/nest → 200 (free)

Knock on a real door.

This door guards a 1-sat fortune from machine.market. Pay it and watch what happens: the server says 402, a wallet pays the invoice, and the browser knocks again with Authorization: L402 macaroon:preimage.

Open the first if you want to see the raw exchange.

The fortune proves you paid for one call. It does not log you in, and it does not promise the fortune comes true.

Six rooms, one rule

The rooms

Each room teaches one part of paying for the web. Start in the garden, end in the lab, or wander.

The rule

The rule, repeated in every room

Payment proves settlement for one bounded request.

It does not prove:

  • who you are
  • that you may do anything else
  • that the thing was delivered
  • that it was any good
